Heat oven to 180\u00b0 Celsius and grease round cake pans with butter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step 2. In a large bowl, beat together cake mix (take vanilla flavoured), water, oil and eggs until well mixed, scraping sides of the bowl occasionally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step 3. Divide batter evenly among 6 small bowls around 2 cups each.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step 4. Using 7 different food colours, tint batter in 1 bowl blue, 1 bowl red, 1 bowl green, 1 bowl yellow, 1 bowl orange (using red and yellow) and 1 bowl purple (using blue and red).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step 5. Refrigerate 3 colours of batter until ready to bake. Pour the remaining 3 colors of batter into cake pans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step 6. Bake for about 18 to 20 minutes or until cake springs back when touched lightly in centre. Remove the cake and let it cool completely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step 7. Then bake and cool the remaining 3 cake layers as directed. In a large bowl, beat shortening and butter with electric mixer on medium speed until light yellow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step 8. On low speed, gradually beat in powdered sugar, vanilla, milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until frosting is smooth, light and fluffy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step 9. On serving plate, place purple cake layer. Spread with frosting to leaving 1\/4 inch of edge. Repeat with blue, green, yellow, orange and red cake layers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Step 10. Spread light coat of frosting on top and side of cake to seal each layer, then frost with remaining frosting on top.
