In acid-base reactions a proton is transferred from an acid to a base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the acid and base are neutral molecules, the product is a\u00a0positive ion\u00a0and a\u00a0negative ion\u00a0and is known as a\u00a0salt. A specific example is the reaction of\u00a0benzoic acid\u00a0with sodium hydroxide to form sodium benzoate (and water, which always forms as a\u00a0by-product\u00a0when the base is hydroxide ion).
