The triple bond is made up of one \u03c3 bond and two \u03c0 bonds. As in alkenes, the \u03c0 bonds\u00a0constitute\u00a0regions of increased electron density lying parallel to the carbon-carbon bond axis. Carbon-carbon triple bonds are very strong bonds, but reactions do occur that break the \u03c0 bonds to form stronger \u03c3 bonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common example of an alkyne is ethyne (also known as acetylene), used as a fuel for oxyacetylene torches in welding applications.
