For example,\u00a0silicon disulfide, SiS<sub>2<\/sub>, has a structure consisting of\u00a0infinite\u00a0chains of SiS<sub>4<\/sub>\u00a0tetrahedrons that share edges. (Each SiS<sub>4<\/sub>\u00a0tetrahedron consists of a central\u00a0silicon\u00a0atom surrounded by and bonded to four sulfur atoms.)\u00a0Phosphorus\u00a0forms a series of molecular sulfides that includes P<sub>4<\/sub>S<sub>3<\/sub>, P<sub>4<\/sub>S<sub>4<\/sub>\u00a0(two distinct forms), P<sub>4<\/sub>S<sub>5<\/sub>, P<sub>4<\/sub>S<sub>7<\/sub>, P<sub>4<\/sub>S<sub>9<\/sub>, and P<sub>4<\/sub>S<sub>10<\/sub>. The structures of all these compounds are derived from a P<sub>4<\/sub>\u00a0tetrahedron in which P\u2015P bonds are replaced by P\u2015S\u2015P units. All these phosphorus sulfides are stable in\u00a0carbon disulfide\u00a0(CS<sub>2<\/sub>), and all react with water to produce\u00a0phosphoric acid\u00a0(H<sub>3<\/sub>PO<sub>4<\/sub>) or other phosphorus\u00a0oxyacids.P<sub>4<\/sub>S<sub>10<\/sub>\u00a0+ 16H<sub>2<\/sub>O \u2192 4H<sub>3<\/sub>PO<sub>4<\/sub>\u00a0+ 10H<sub>2<\/sub>SThe tips of\u00a0strike-anywhere matches\u00a0contain P<sub>4<\/sub>S<sub>3<\/sub>, which ignites in air as a result of the friction produced when the match is rubbed against a rough surface. A flame is produced by reaction of the phosphorus sulfide with active chemicals in the\u00a0match\u00a0head.
