It deals with the chemistry of life, and as such it draws on the techniques of\u00a0analytical, organic, and\u00a0physical chemistry, as well as those of physiologists concerned with the molecular basis of vital processes. All chemical changes within the organism\u2014either the\u00a0degradation\u00a0of substances, generally to gain necessary energy, or the buildup of complex molecules necessary for life processes\u2014are collectively called\u00a0metabolism. These chemical changes depend on the action of organic\u00a0catalysts\u00a0known as\u00a0enzymes, and enzymes, in turn, depend for their existence on the genetic apparatus of the\u00a0cell. It is not surprising, therefore, that biochemistry enters into the investigation of chemical changes in\u00a0disease, drug action, and other aspects of\u00a0medicine, as well as in\u00a0nutrition,\u00a0genetics, and agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term\u00a0<em>biochemistry<\/em>\u00a0is synonymous with two somewhat older terms:\u00a0<em>physiological chemistry<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>biological chemistry<\/em>. Those aspects of biochemistry that deal with the chemistry and function of very large molecules (e.g.,\u00a0proteins\u00a0and\u00a0nucleic acids) are often grouped under the term\u00a0<em>molecular biology<\/em>. Biochemistry is a young\u00a0science, having been known under that term only since about 1900.
