In some viruses the entire genetic material is\u00a0encoded\u00a0in a single RNA molecule, while in the segmented RNA viruses several RNA molecules may be present. Many RNA viruses such as HIV use a specialized\u00a0enzyme\u00a0called\u00a0reverse transcriptase\u00a0that permits replication of the virus through a DNA intermediate.
