Lactose consists of two aldohexoses\u2014\u03b2-D-galactose and glucose\u2014linked so that the aldehyde group at the anomeric&nbsp;carbon&nbsp;of glucose is free to react; i.e., lactose is a reducing sugar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.britannica.com\/66\/16966-004-0F37E460\/Carbohydrates-structure-beta-lactose.jpg\" alt=\"Carbohydrates. (sugar)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A variety of metabolic disorders related to lactose may occur in infants; in some cases, they are the result of a failure to metabolize properly the&nbsp;galactose&nbsp;portion of the&nbsp;molecul<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/molecule\">e<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although not found in uncombined form in nature, the disaccharide maltose is biologically important because it is a product of the enzymatic breakdown of starches during&nbsp;digestion. Maltose consists of \u03b1-D-glucose linked to a second glucose unit in such a way that maltose is a reducing sugar.
