This process, called&nbsp;photosynthesis, results in both the release of&nbsp;oxygen&nbsp;gas into the atmosphere and the transformation of light energy into the&nbsp;chemical energy&nbsp;of carbohydrates. The energy stored by plants during the formation of carbohydrates is used by animals to carry out mechanical work and to perform biosynthetic activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During photosynthesis, an immediate phosphorous-containing product known as&nbsp;3-phosphoglyceric acid&nbsp;is formed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.britannica.com\/84\/16984-004-C5D25451\/Carbohydrates-Formula-acid-chemical-photosynthesis-plants.jpg\" alt=\"Carbohydrates.
